© BSP 2013 Dioxins in ecosystems The Northern Wheatear is a model species as migratory songbird, declining passerine in Dutch dune landscapes.  This ecotoxicological research theme is still in its initial phase. In close collaboration with Herman van Oosten from the Bargerveen Foundation who studies dwindling populations of Northern Wheatears in Dutch dunes and inland drift sands, we discovered unusual embryo anomalies in failed eggs. These eggs were found to contain high dioxin (and PCB) levels. Current research is focused on the spread, effects, and accumulation mechanisms of these compounds in Dutch nature reserves.
